The Marshall County Board of Education on Tuesday unanimously approved a 3% tax rate reduction, bringing the tax rate down to 82% for the 2024-25 school year.
Board Chairman John Miller initially proposed lowering it to 80% from the current 85%, but after discussion the board decided to be more conservative and lower it to 82%. did.
He noted that Marshall County's tax revenue from industry and businesses continues to increase each year, and the school share is increasing as well.
Miller said the reduction in the excess levy rate is the board's way of showing appreciation to taxpayers for their support of past levies that have generated funds for various improvements throughout the district. Ta.
The new tax rate will be submitted to the State Tax Commission and the State Board of Education. The board will then reconvene on April 16 to give final approval.
“We've seen a significant increase in the county's tax base and a significant increase in excess levies (revenues),” he said after the meeting. “We are not going to jeopardize the program. We have four major projects underway. We are going to make sure we have the funds to pay the bills, and we are doing so. But we never want to forget the taxpayers who support us.”
Meanwhile, the board welcomed a large number of students and their parents to a meeting held at Washington Lands Elementary School. Approximately 100 students were recognized for their accomplishments in the field of music at the West Virginia Music Educators Association's annual in-service conference in Charleston. Each received a certificate handed out by a board member.
“As a board, there is nothing more exciting and gratifying than celebrating the successes of our students and staff,” Miller said.
The board also congratulated teacher Alison Varlas, who recently became a National Board of Education certified teacher.
The board also recognized Superintendent Shelby Haynes, who was recently named the West Virginia Music Educators Association Superintendent of the Year at the West Virginia Music Educators Association's annual meeting.
