Meta's large-scale language model and AI assistant have been upgraded.
The company released the first model of Llama 3 on Thursday in two sizes with parameters 8B and 70B. These are integrated into Meta AI, the company's artificial intelligence assistant.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced “big news in AI” in an Instagram post on Thursday.
“We believe that this new model will make Meta AI the most intelligent AI assistant at our disposal,” he said.
Meta said in a blog post Thursday that the latest model has “significantly reduced false rejection rates, improved tuning, and increased diversity of model responses,” as well as advances in inference, code generation, and instructions.
“With Llama 3, we set out to build the best open model on par with the best proprietary models currently available,” the post said. “This next generation of his Llama demonstrates cutting-edge performance on a wide range of industry benchmarks and offers new features such as improved inference. We believe these are the best open source models in their class. I believe that.”
Meta bills Llama as open source, but with Llama 2, companies with more than 700 million monthly active users must request a license from the company to use Llama, which Meta Sometimes it is allowed and sometimes it is not.
In the near future, Meta hopes to “make Llama 3 multilingual and multimodal, enable longer contexts, and continue to improve overall performance across core LLM functionality such as inference and coding.” the company said in a blog post.
So what does this change mean for meta-AI?
The AI assistant can help with tasks like making restaurant recommendations, planning trips, and making your emails sound more professional.
Meta AI's Imagine feature now produces sharper images faster. The images will start appearing as you type and will change “every few characters you type,” a press release issued Thursday said.
Meta AI is available on Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger, and more. on the browser. The company says multimodal Meta AI will soon be included in Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses as well. It is available in English in more than a dozen countries outside the United States.
As for what happens next, Meta says it is working on a model with more than 400B parameters and is still training it.
“When you think about the major AI assistants people use today, I don’t think many people seriously think about Meta AI,” Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in an article published Thursday in The told the Verge. “But I think this is the moment where we really start introducing it to a lot of people, and we expect it to become a pretty major product.”
Of course, Meta AI faces stiff competition from well-known AI assistants such as OpenAI's ChatGPT, Microsoft's Copilot, and Anthropic's Claude.
