The Maritime Administration (MARAD) recently announced the designation of 32 Centers of Excellence (CoE) for the training and education of maritime workers in the country.
The CoE supports post-secondary maritime training programs that prepare students for careers in the maritime industry.
Under section 51706 of title 46, United States Code, the Secretary of Transportation may establish a domestic maritime worker training and education facility if the location has been demonstrated to be particularly successful in training and educating maritime workers. Authorized for designation as a “Center of Excellence”.
“Our Center of Excellence designation recognizes the high standards of maritime education and training provided by these organizations,” said Maritime Administrator Anne Phillips. “These institutions play a critical role in providing domestic seafarers with the expertise they need to best serve the maritime industry.”
The newly designated CoEs are located at 50 maritime training locations in 17 states and Guam.
“Our nation relies on a highly skilled seafarer workforce to strengthen both our economy and national security,” said U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg. “The 32 Centers of Excellence we are designating today will facilitate training opportunities outside of traditional four-year degree programs and bring more Americans into this great maritime career. .”
In July, MARAD announced a call for applications.
