MAHOMET — The owners of Mahomet-based business The Brush Man have been considering moving to a larger facility for some time. Action approved this week by the Mahomet City Council would pave the way.
Owner Dave Monaghan said he will build a new flex warehouse location in east Mahomet.
The approximately 10-acre property will provide space for his business, as well as space for other companies to build on their offices and commercial warehouse sites.
Village Administrator Patrick Brown said the development is a win for Monaghan's company and the village.
“I like that project because there's nothing like it right now,” Brown said. “If it satisfies the need to keep businesses in the community, we’re excited in a way.”
The company, currently located in West Mahomet, plans to build a facility on Lake of the Woods Road. Monaghan also agreed to purchase and continue operating the Banko Overhead Door business in the area.
He plans to retain 12 employees from The Brushman and four from Bankco.
“Initially, the Brushman building will be 25,000 square feet,” Monahan said. “The remaining buildings are expected to be smaller units of about 2,000 square feet.” If additional space is needed, more space is also needed.
Founded in 1976, Brush Man was acquired by Monahan in 2009. The business is a wholesaler that sells jobsite supplies such as brooms, garbage bags, disposable paint brushes, roller frames, and roller covers.
Jill Gass of Gass & Associates Real Estate in Champaign, who is representing Monaghan, said her company will be involved in “marketing and leasing the space.”
“We haven't decided yet how much space we'll have,” Gass said. “The point of flex space is that if someone needs two spaces, he can combine them into one.”
Gass said the impetus was to keep Brushman in Mahomet.
“He was running into a bit of a roadblock finding suitable land to build on and was looking at other communities,” she said.
Construction is scheduled to begin in the fall.
Mr Monaghan said tenants could range from people wanting to store a collection of vintage cars to contractors providing office or storage space.
