The last time Vinicius Junior played for Valencia, he was plagued by racial abuse.
Real Madrid's Brazilian forward got some revenge on Saturday at the Mestalla Stadium, scoring twice as his side came back from a 2-0 deficit to share the points.
Madrid thought they had won when Jude Bellingham headed in what appeared to be a last-gasp goal, but the referee blew the final whistle just before the ball split the line.
England forward Bellingham received a red card for protesting.
Vinicius scored in the 50th and 76th minutes, erasing first-half goals from Hugo Duro and Roman Yaremchuk.
The racist attack last May was the worst of the repeated abuse the player had to endure in Spain.
This led to growing support for the Brazilian forward, forcing the football authorities to take action, but the insults continued.
There were no immediate reports of further racial slurs on Saturday, but a large crowd chanted “Vinicius is stupid” and booed him throughout.
After his first goal, Vinicius raised his fist to the Valencia fans behind the goal, and after the equalizer he cupped his ears toward those in pain.
After the match, Vinicius posted an image of himself with a raised fist on his Instagram with the words “The fight continues.”
“Vinicius played a very good game,'' Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti said.
“He was decisive for us, even though he was more effective inside the area than outside.
“(Dimitri) Fourquier played great defending him, so we had to find space in the area and he scored two very important goals.”
Ancelotti said the referee was “frustrated but not insulting'' Bellingham, who protested the decision and shouted abuse in English.
Madrid lead La Liga with a seven-point lead over second-place Girona and nine points over third-place Barcelona.
7th place Real Sociedad lost to Sevilla 2-3.
Sociedad have started the season well, but have lost five of their last six games in all competitions.
Getafe's 15-goal striker Borja Mayoral was substituted late in the team's 3-3 draw with Las Palmas with what appeared to be an injury to his left foot.
The hosts squandered 2-0 and 3-2 leads, with away Las Palmas finally leveling the score with Munir El Haddadi's goal in the 57th minute.
Rayo Vallecano drew 1-1 at home with Cadiz, but the match was interrupted for several minutes in the second half due to hail falling on the field during a heavy storm.
