As the NBA All-Star break draws to a close and players enjoy their last day off, some players can't take time off from work.
Less than two days after appearing in the All-Star Game, Jaylen Brown is back on the basketball court. He played against a much smaller opponent at a youth basketball event in Puerto Rico on Tuesday, but the 7uice Foundation founder didn't miss a beat.
Brown's visit to San Juan comes as the Celtics forward seeks to expand the impact of his philanthropy. Ms. Brown is partnering with her VRDG Group, a local investment firm, to explore ways to increase access to education on the island.
“I came here to enjoy a few days off before reporting (to Boston) to continue the season. But I also wanted to explore Puerto Rico, get together with individuals, and think about how we can make the world a better place. That's the purpose,” Brown told reporters. A longtime advocate for educational equity, Brown is on a mission to close the opportunity gap for children in Black and brown communities. After signing a record $305 million contract with the Celtics in July, he explained why education is one of the foundation's main focuses.
“I think education is one of the most powerful tools we have and one of the ways we control our social mobility from an early age,” Brown said.
He said Tuesday that children in the continental United States face very similar problems to children in Puerto Rico.
“Creating opportunities, resources, jobs and welfare for African Americans and Latinos. [Those] Things that aren't being talked about. “Education has always been a passion of mine and I am a spokesperson for finding different ways for young people to receive the best education possible,” said Brown.
Brown's goal during his first trip to Puerto Rico was to speak with local leaders and learn what possibilities exist for future efforts.
“Basically, you want to get a feel for it and get used to it,” Brown said. “I hope that after this visit there will be more and that we will be able to learn a little.”
