On Sunday, Jannik Sinner defeated Grigor Dimitrov 6-3, 6-1 to win his first Miami Open title and his third title of the 2024 season.
The Italian, who won the Australian Open in January and followed up with a victory in Rotterdam, put in a scintillating performance to defeat Dimitrov in straight sets at Hard Rock Stadium.
The 22-year-old became the new world number two with the victory, avenging defeats he suffered in the previous two tournament finals in 2021 and 2023.
It also means his loss to Carlos Alcaraz in the semifinals at Indian Wells two weeks ago is his only loss so far this year.
“It was a very special week for me. I faced different situations and different opponents on court,” Sinner told Sky Sports. “But I think I managed the situation well.
“I'm very happy to be number two in the world. It's just a number. The most important thing for me was trying to execute my game plan and I managed to do that.”
Dimitrov, who is making a comeback after defeating Alcaraz in the quarter-finals, had the first chance to gain the upper hand against Sinner, but had the Bulgarian not taken an early break point, things would have been dire. It could have been different.
Sinner then broke in the next game to take the first set, taking control and clinching victory with a stunning backhand winner that brought the entire crowd to their feet.
His dominance continued as Dimitrov won just one more match before Sinner shut out and won his second career Masters 1000 title.
Navratilova: “For now, sinners are invincible”
Martina Navratilova talks about Sky Sports Tennis:
“Superlatives are out. Sinner is unbeatable for now.
“I think the only person who can beat him is Djokovic.
“Yannik is just cruising. He's not even at 100 percent and he'll still easily win the match.”
“Near perfect performance”
Colin Fleming talks about Sky Sports Tennis:
“Today we witnessed something very special here in Miami.
“This young man [Sinner] The stars of our sport. How lucky we are to have him.
“It was a great moment for him and his team. It was a near perfect performance.
“From 2-2 in the first set, it's as close to perfection as I've ever seen. Dimitrov didn't play a bad match, but no one could live with Sinner today.”
