INDIANAPOLIS — Hoosier high school students will have two new sanctioned sports to choose from next school year.
The Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) announced Tuesday that full certification has been approved for two sports: boys' volleyball and girls' wrestling.
The IHSAA said the change was made during the board's annual review of the charter on Monday afternoon.
The IHSAA will now establish state championships for men's volleyball and women's wrestling as officially recognized sports, with competition details expected to be announced in the coming months.
Tournaments in both sports have been held by separate organizations since 1994 and 2017, respectively, but will now be supported and funded by the IHSAA.
The IHSAA said both sports have experienced significant growth over the 24 months since they were added to the “Emerging Sports Process” in 2022. There are more than 100 high school boys' volleyball teams in the state, while more than 1,400 girls from 177 schools participate in wrestling, officials said.
These are the first two sports to be fully recognized by the IHSAA since Unified Flag Football in 2018 and Unified Track and Field in 2013, both of which were affiliated with the Special Olympics. Before that, the last official sport added to the IHSAA was boys and girls soccer in his 1994.
