CHARLESTON — No. 3 seed Tucker County's defense and inside game were too much for No. 6 Tyler Consolidated in a Class A quarterfinal game Wednesday morning inside the Coliseum and Convention Center. Ta.
Raven Matthews and Erika Zarc combined for 24 points and the Lady Mountain Lions advanced to the semifinals with a 64-31 victory over the Lady Silver Knights.
Tucker County (20-5) will play Gilmer County for the third time this season on Friday at 7:15 p.m. The second-seeded Lady Titans defeated Riverview 78-33 in the quarterfinals on Wednesday.
“Today was a workmanlike effort.” Lady Mountain Lions coach Dave Helmick said. “I was really proud of our defensive effort, and we're moving forward. That's the goal here.”
Holding a slim 14-10 lead with 2:15 left in the first quarter, Tucker County's defense did not allow Tyler Consolidated to score until 1:37 left in the first half, when the Lady Mountain Lions They overturned a four-point advantage. With 3:52 left in the second quarter, Zirk made a layup for a 25-10 cushion.
Maya Gross' jumper at 2:13 of the third extended the lead to 23 points, 41-18.
The Lady Silver Knights took a 44-27 lead on Jules Lattea's two free throws with six minutes left in the game before Tucker County closed out the game with a 20-4 surge.
The Lady Mountain Lions forced 36 turnovers in the morning and outscored Tyler Consolidated 38-11 in the paint.
Matthews led the way with 13 points, 13 rebounds and two blocked shots, followed by Zirk with 11 points and Macy Helmick and Katie Hicks with 10 points each.
Helmick, who signed with West Virginia Wesleyan, also had 10 assists, seven boards and six steals, Makenna Evans had four steals and three helpers, and Hicks had three assists.
Braden Wall scored 10 points and Lathea collected 14 rebounds and blocked two shots for the Lady Silver Knights, who finished the season 13-13.
The Lady Mountain Lions lost both regular-season contests to Gilmer County in close games, trailing by six points at home and by five points in Glenville.
