Adult children of immigrants make up a “disproportionately large share” of doctors, surgeons and other health care providers in the United States, a new study finds.
According to a KFF analysis released Wednesday, “U.S.-born nonelderly adults whose parents were both born outside the United States make up 13 percent of physicians, surgeons, and other health care workers.” This is more than double their share of the workforce (6%, according to the report).
The report comes as Congress and the Biden administration continue to debate U.S. immigration policy amid a nationwide shortage of doctors, nurses and other health care providers.
“These data suggest that proposals to limit immigrant labor force participation or eliminate birthright citizenship for some immigrant children could have a negative impact on the U.S. workforce and economy. ,” write Drishti Pillai, Akasu Pillai, and Samantha Artiga, authors of the KFF analysis.
“The declining population of first- and second-generation immigrants could further exacerbate the labor shortage,” KFF officials wrote. “In particular, the current health workforce shortage is expected to continue across professions such as allied health, long-term support services, behavioral health, and specialty physicians; Such restrictions are likely to worsen the situation, given that this includes not only immigrants but also immigrant adults working in a variety of health care workers and industries. It can have a negative impact on our well-being and our economy.”
The analysis found that 23% of doctors, surgeons, and other health care workers are immigrant adults, compared to 19% of the population. It was also shown that And immigrant adults are especially important in long-term care facilities, making up nearly three in 10, or 28%, of such workers. “In contrast, nonelderly adults with at least one U.S.-born parent make up a smaller proportion of physicians, surgeons, other health care workers, and long-term care direct care workers compared to their share of the population. low,” KFF said. Analysis shows.
