YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) — Each side of Youngstown has a youth football team, except Northside. But it's about change.
Organizers of a new group called Gee Lien Little Tigers met Thursday night at Crandall Park. They have formed a tackle football team with cheerleaders.
One of the organizers is Jay Glover, who helped run Little Redmen on the South Side. Now, he wants to help Northside kids not only with tackle football, but also with flag football, basketball, track and field and coaching programs.
“I haven't played sports in over 10 years.” [have] “I felt like there was a problem with the kids in this neighborhood and it needed to be addressed,” Glover said. “Would you like to start now?”
The first day of registration for the Gee Lien Little Tigers will be held at Crandall Park on Sunday, March 31st from 3pm to 5pm. There will be a second registration day on April 27th.
Conditioning begins in May and June. First practice is July 8th.
And on the topic of youth football teams, organizers of the champion Little Flashes say they need sponsors. The league is trying to buy new scoreboards but is having trouble maintaining the fields.
