The wife of an investor has started a GoFundMe to help former President Trump with mounting legal costs following Friday's New York fraud verdict.
The GoFundMe goal is $355 million, which is nearly the amount that Judge Arthur Engoron ordered Trump to pay in the civil fraud case. As of Saturday night, GoFundMe had already raised more than $185,000 from more than 4,000 donors.
Including interest, Trump and his companies could pay more than $450 million, according to the New York Attorney General's Office.
This online fundraising campaign was started by Elena Cardone, wife of entrepreneur and investor Grant Cardone.
“I stand firmly with President Donald Trump in the face of unprecedented mistreatment by some members of New York’s judiciary,” Elena Cardone wrote on the GoFundMe page.
She continued: “The latest legal battle he faces is not just an attack on him, but an attack on the very ideals of fairness and due process that all Americans deserve.”
Friday's fine was imposed on the heels of Trump being ordered to pay $83.3 million last month after a judge ruled that he defamed author E. Jean Carroll. Trump was ordered to pay Carroll $5 million last year.
Trump's lawyers denounced Friday's ruling as a “politically-fueled witch hunt” and said the former president would appeal the ruling.
