February Polk County Board of Education meeting notes

The Polk County Board of Education took time at its February meeting to highlight and praise the work of the district's transportation staff.
At its regular board meeting held Feb. 12 at Polk Central Elementary School, the organization recognized the men and women who operate and maintain a fleet of more than 30 yellow activity buses that travel more than 350,000 miles annually.
The district recently underwent a state inspection and review, which resulted in the Department of Transportation achieving top results in the state. This ranking is based on condition analysis, including budgeting, parts alignment, quality and frequency of scheduled maintenance, and how well safety and repair issues are addressed.
The board recognized Transportation Director Jackie Crump, all Department of Transportation staff and bus drivers for their dedication and hard work in transporting children safely to schools and events.
Other business:
- Students at Polk Central Elementary School delighted the board by singing the Star-Spangled Banner and sharing what they learned about the solar system.
- Board Chair Mike Ashworth recognized and congratulated Kendall Stoney, an academically and intellectually gifted teacher who received the Janice Anderson Brumley Educator Grant Award to further advance AIG education.
- Director of Operations Brandon Schweitzer provided an update on the Forbes Preschool Project and discussed the Safe Schools Grant recently awarded to the district.
- Jan Crump, Director of Curriculum and Instruction, updated the board on student performance in summer programs and early literacy, highlighting notable initiatives that have contributed to significant proficiency gains by each school so far this year. .
- The board approved two requests for reimbursement from the state Lottery Capital Fund to address ongoing capital projects.
- The board approved the submission of an annual Head Start grant to secure funding for the district's preschool program.
The next Polk County Board of Education meeting will be held on March 11th.
