According to various sources including SPORT, MARCA and Fabrizio Romano, citing anonymous sources, FC Barcelona head coach Xavi Hernández has decided to stay at the club and fulfill his contract, which expires in 2025. He said he did.
The club legend replaced fellow former midfielder Ronald Koeman at the end of 2021 after the Dutchman was sacked.
In his first full season, 2022/2023, Xavi led the Catalans to their first La Liga title in four years and also won the Spanish Super Cup at the expense of rivals Real Madrid.
However, things have not gone so well this term, with Barça looking set to hand over both pieces of silverware to Los Blancos.
Madrid beat Barça 4-1 in the Riyadh final to win the Super Cup in early 2024, and after a 3-2 win in El Clasico, they now have an 11-point lead in the top flight.
In between these events, Xavi dramatically announced that he would be stepping down on June 30th, following a 5-3 loss to Villarreal at the end of January.
His men then recorded 13 consecutive wins. And Xavi believes his announcement contributed to the turnaround.
Barça were brought back to reality with a 6-4 loss to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League quarter-finals.
Coupled with the defeat in Clasico, Barça are certain to end the season without a trophy, but a report in Monday's SPORT newspaper explains that Xavi appears to be heading towards staying.
But on Thursday, the paper reported that Xavi was “more in than out” of the club of his life.
However, following a meeting at president Joan Laporta's official residence, which was also attended by sporting director Deco, Xavi reportedly agreed to extend his contract until June 30, 2025.
