BRAINERD — Essentia Health provides sports physical exams to student-athletes from middle school through college in Minnesota and Wisconsin.
In Minnesota, a sports physical is valid for three years. A sports physical exam, also called a pre-participation physical assessment, helps determine whether it is safe for your child to participate in a particular sport. Most states, including Minnesota, require student-athletes to undergo a sports physical before starting a new sport (including practice) or starting a new competitive season.
Sports physical exams can be performed on their own or as part of a well-child or youth visit. Parents are advised to schedule their child's physical exam at least six weeks before the start of the sports season so that they have enough time to follow up on anything if necessary.
Forms are available online at mshsl.org. Please fill out and sign the appropriate forms before your appointment and bring a copy with you to your child's medical exam. Patients other than Essentia are also welcome.
During a sports physical, parents will learn:
- Is it safe for my child to participate in sports?
- How to protect children from injury.
- How to play safely even if you have a medical condition or chronic illness.
“Sports physicals are important for young athletes and ensure they are healthy and safe for competition,” Essentia pediatrician Dr. Jonathan Kennight said in a news release. “When it's time for their annual physical, we also recommend it, considering everything from mental health to growth to vaccines. It's a smart move for their overall health and You can be prepared for activities both inside and outside the country.”
