This month's On the Line column and corresponding podcast explore important topics in workforce development. This interview is with Holly Gottfredson, president of his two companies serving the construction field, American Metal Craft, Inc. and its sister company, Finishing Dynamics. In addition to running two companies, Gottfredson is involved in numerous industry organizations and educational initiatives, including CCAI's Finishing Education Foundation and the Women's Finishing Program. Ms. Gottfredson will discuss the evolving role of women in manufacturing and the importance of STEM programs and industry education. As a father of two daughters, I was inspired by my conversation with Gottfredson. Gottfredson was a clear advocate not only for opportunities for women, but also for the future of the manufacturing workforce. Like any parent, I want my children to know about all the career opportunities out there for their future. Increasing opportunities and advancements in technology in all areas of manufacturing make a career in our industry a truly promising one. Check out this month's On the Line column (page 8).
It's difficult to talk about the trends impacting manufacturing today without revisiting the topic of workforce and education. The skilled labor shortage continues to impact all areas of manufacturing. Succession planning for the baby boomer generation, and by extension his Generation X, is a top priority for many business owners and facility managers. Automation solutions offer some, but not all, answers to these challenges. Additionally, the introduction of new robots, new software, and new tools for monitoring and inspection introduces a whole new list of qualifications. And that requires training and education. The future of our employees is, and should be, one of the top concerns of today's industry leaders, and developing the people who will take the reins is essential.
When it comes to future leaders, as of this writing, P.F.The deadline for submissions for our annual 40 Under 40 program is approaching. This program is designed to recognize the next generation of industry leaders in the surfacing industry – individuals under the age of 40 who are making a difference in the world of coatings and finishing both in their companies and in the surfacing community. . This program focuses on potential leaders, trailblazers, and hardworking industry volunteers and community members who contribute to the finishing industry. In April, we will announce this year's class of Emerging Leaders. Please stay tuned.
