FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE) – Students gathered for Kids Day, a fun-filled day at the Fresno County Fairgrounds.
The fair became a children's play area on Kids Day and a fun place for young people with special needs.
“Students who come to these events are often not out in the community normally, so this is an opportunity for the community to come to the students, so they can bring their own activities. We hope to build a relationship of trust and security,” said Joy Bratton, Director of Special Education.
The Fresno County Superintendent's Office has hosted this event for 17 years.
The Special Education Department provides medical and educational services to more than 1,500 young people, but no matter your age, Kids Day is a fun experience for everyone.
Fresno County Superintendent Michelle Cofer said, “Parents come here and watch their children interact with their peer groups, teachers, and para members, all in fun. We know that we learn through play.”
Vanessa Marroquin took her 7-year-old son to Kids Day and said she was grateful for the opportunity to interact with others in a safe environment.
“I love that I get to come out here and be with other autistic kids, and he gets to be with other autistic kids, too. I can understand, oh, that's normal, don't think of me as different, because I'm normal and events like this are held for the sake of children. I'm very happy about that,” Marroquin said.
As the parent of a child with special needs, Marroquin is able to share special moments with his son.
