EAST WENATCHEE — Eastmont elementary schools will soon have a life skills program as the district's need for special education services increases.
At Monday's school board meeting, Special Education Director Katie Tucker announced that from December 2020 to February 2024, the total number of special education students in the Eastmont School District increased from 739 to 780. .
Currently, Rock Island is the only elementary school without a life skills program, but a life skills program was added to Lee Elementary this year as the number of special needs students at Cascade and Kenroy elementary schools began to increase. Ta.
Life skills will be added to Rock Island next year. Once the program is established there, one of Kenroy's classes will move to Rock Island. Tucker said some students may be able to remain in their current building if that's what's best for them and their families.
The main benefit of expanding the program is that students can attend their neighborhood school and not have to attend another school within the district.
“Our hope is that every student will have the same opportunity to attend a school in their neighborhood and attend school with their siblings and friends,” Tucker said.
Ms Tucker said not being able to offer children from all families the opportunity to attend school together was “one of the hardest things”.
“That's a really difficult conversation,” Tucker said. “We welcome families and sincerely hope that this school will absolutely meet your child’s needs.”
