GoodRoots Education combines therapeutic gardening, parent education, and gentle, compassionate gardening practices.
Good Roots is a nature-based family education program started several years ago by Tina Cross.
It is based on the idea of therapeutic gardening. Cross focused on plants with high sensory value, such as relaxing aromas, vibrant colors, and delicious flavors.
“Therapeutic gardening is the same as a gentle, mindful gardening practice,” Cross says. “We don't really focus on how many seeds we can put in a tray or how many weeds we can pull. It’s about working with materials.”
Cross says this mindful gardening may reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression.
“It also helps us integrate socially and connect with each other. It can lower blood pressure and cortisol levels. There are literally dozens of benefits,” she said. “And in general, spending time in nature makes humans happier and kinder, so you can't go wrong.”
