DULUTH, Minn. (Northern News Now) — Thousands of outdoor sports fans are heading to DECC's Duluth Sports Show, hoping to get outside and use this year's latest gadgets.
“We see big sales in early spring, which means a lot of people buying boats and a lot of people getting on the water,” said Jarrid Houston, partner at Lund Boat Company.
Home to some of the area's most popular boat brands, the arena was buzzing with shopping Friday, but taking it home is a different story.
“There are a lot of people doing what we call holdovers, last year’s production boats,” Houston says.
Holdover Lund boats are cheaper than newer models, but they can still come with a hefty price tag. However, this popular boat seller was able to sell up to 20 boats at the show each year due to its close relationships with loan companies.
“Everyone is here to help each other, whether it's North Shore Bank or other local establishments around the Twin Ports,” Houston said.
While some anglers were busy looking for ways to get into the water, others decided to consider a guided fishing trip.
“Guided trips cost about $600 per day. Last year it was about $550,” said fishing guide Ryan Fehn.
Even with the price increases, Ryan Fehn still gets a quarter of his customers to sign up for his shows.
“People still had to fish. They're enjoying their free time,” Fehn said. “People are working hard and looking to take guided fishing trips.”
No matter what they sell, the vendors working at the Duluth Sports Show want to help anglers and outdoor sports fans get outside as quickly as possible.
The Duluth Sports Show runs through Sunday, February 18th.
