RICHFIELD, ID (KMVT/KSVT) — A different kind of basketball tournament was held at Litchfield High School on March 12, but it was all for a good cause.
Sports and mental health have become increasingly intertwined in recent years, and Litchfield High School hosted a unique event that featured not only a donkey basketball tournament but also mental health resources, but how exactly did this idea come about? Or?
“Honestly, we were trying to come up with an idea that was really fun. It was based around mental health, but we needed to bring the community together and do something fun. Things like this are often depressing, so we just needed to come together,” said event organizer Amber Riley Moore. .
The tournament featured four teams: students from Litchfield and Dietrich High Schools, Litchfield High School staff, and Lincoln County first responders, with members of each student team discussing the formation of their teams.
“They are [the school] All you have to do is post about it and if you want to play, go to one of the parents here and one of our teachers and sign up,” said Jackson Truman, a junior varsity member from Litchfield.
“Honestly, it was all the seniors, but the AD asked me and another guy I knew from the juniors. [class]I was the one who answered,” Dietrich junior team member Brody Torgerson said.
Once the team was set up, it was important to bring people in. These small communities do a great job of supporting local events. This was no exception, especially given the participation of people whose mental health was not affected. support.
“[I came for] “When we think about the well-being of our community, so many people are struggling with their mental health during this time, so any time we can help raise awareness, it's great,” said the Lincoln County Sheriff.
The donkey basketball tournament was ultimately won by Litchfield's staff. While this event was a fun way to highlight a serious issue, always remember that if you or someone you know is struggling with their mental health, help is always available.
