Multiple states on Thursday reported service disruptions at Department of Motor Vehicles offices in a “nationwide power outage” that halted license-related transactions due to “loss of cloud connectivity.”
The American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators is a non-governmental organization that: The company, which provides software to DMV offices, announced Thursday that “the network that connects auto dealerships across the country to each other and to various certification services has been disrupted due to a loss of cloud connectivity.”
The power outage lasted from 9:50 a.m. EDT to 12:30 p.m., an AAMVA spokesperson said.
“During that time, there was no ability to process the messages that support driver license and vehicle title transactions. As a result, many motor vehicle agencies were unable to issue driver licenses and vehicle titles during the outage.” AAMVA said it will work internally and with cloud providers to identify the “root cause” of the outage.
AAMVA announced that connectivity had been restored in nearly all states as of 2 p.m. EDT, noting that “the outage has nothing to do with software and is strictly connectivity.”
DMV offices across the country were warning local residents about power outages on social media Thursday.

The office said, “At this point, it is undetermined when the service will be restored.''
“Due to a national system outage, we are unable to process license and ID-related transactions at this time,” the Massachusetts Registrar of Motor Vehicles wrote to X.
