The U.S. Department of Education has released a final rule under Title IX titled “Promoting Educational Equity and Opportunity'' that applies to all elementary and secondary schools and institutions of higher education. The rule aims to ensure that “no one experiences sex discrimination, including sexual harassment or sexual violence, in federally funded education.”
The new rules will “protect against discrimination based on gender stereotypes, sexual orientation, gender identity, and sexual characteristics,” and the department outlined three rules on discrimination, accountability, and support for students and families. did.
“These final rules clarify Title IX’s requirement that schools promptly and effectively address all forms of sex discrimination,” said Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights Katherine Ramon.
Education officials are still in the process of developing Title IX regulations related to athletics.
