As Purim approaches, the Ministry of Education on Sunday published guidelines for education teams on how to treat holidays in the education framework, depending on the security situation and the characteristics of the current period. The ministry advises schools not to allow students to attend school wearing costumes that may cause alarm.
The ministry recommends that principals and teachers talk with students and parents about how to properly celebrate Purim. We are encouraged to encourage participation in the joy of Purim in a manner and style that respects and recognizes the concerns and sorrows of individuals. Additionally, as part of the guidelines, care should be taken to avoid costumes that are likely to cause fear, panic or harm.
In the coming days, the teaching team will discuss the costumes students will choose and work together to decide on costumes that allow for personal expression and creativity without endangering the health of those dressed or those around them. I aim to do that. Additionally, students are required to demonstrate delicacy and personal responsibility in choosing costumes to avoid harm to others.
Students who arrive at school or kindergarten wearing costumes that may threaten or frighten others or that may affect the emotional state of others will be asked to work with parents to change the costume. The educational institution will notify parents and students of the school or kindergarten of this information in advance.
