DENVER (KDVR) — A Denver man is using technology to take mindfulness and intentionality to another level.
A journaling app called “Penciv” is a safe place to reflect on your initial thoughts and feelings, with the option to share them with those who matter most.
App creator Jinhyun Shin said it is intended to be a mental health tool that aids the process of self-reflection and increases self-awareness.
“Using the app first prompts you to identify your emotions and then expand on them. It seems like a very elementary habit, but how important it is in increasing your self-awareness. “There's a lot of research and science to back it up,” Shin said.
The app allows users to categorize entries, upload photos and audio recordings, and share them with their contacts.
“There's real evidence to suggest that once you experience that rigor initially, you experience this slow release of pleasure throughout the day,” Singh said. “Research shows that being able to observe and identify your emotions has similar benefits.”
Singh said the app is also used in treatment clinics.
“At a time when the world is experiencing overwhelming anxiety, we have heard some incredible success stories of people learning how to cope with their distress and reduce stress.” said Shin.
With everything stored securely in one place, users can look back at their entries and compare how they felt from month to month.
“My wish is for people to use the digital space as a safe space and not feel threatened,” Singh said. “So that we can not only manage our own lives, but also truly connect and stay in touch with people around the world.”
All thoughts and considerations are kept private unless you decide to share them.
“We aimed for something that you can carry in your pocket at any time and feel safe,” says Shin.
Penciv is free and available for download from the App Store and Google Play.
