I've spent most of the past few weeks watching the CBS Sports Top 25 and 1 Daily College Basketball Rankings, which have the Boilermakers at No. 1 despite either Houston or UW holding that spot. I've spent quite a lot of time justifying how Purdue is the best in the sport. in the AP Top 25 poll. And I still believe Purdue has some of the best pieces in the sport. That means the Boilermakers remain in first place for the 19th straight day in the Top 25 and 1, which was updated Sunday morning. But in the spirit of transparency, I considered moving Houston to No. 1 after Saturday's 76-46 win over Kansas. I really think we're at a point where we could file a lawsuit against either Purdue, UW, or Houston. To become number one right now.
Let's explain each case.
- Purdue: In the case of Purdue, the Boilermakers have more wins against schools ranked in the top 25 in the NET, with a better than 18-3 record in the first two quadrants. It is tied to the fact that there are no players who are. Our track record is also No.1.
- University: UW's case is tied to the fact that the Huskies are the 2024 NCAA Tournament favorite in the betting market and the only team that can match Purdue's record in the first two quadrants. They also have more wins than anyone else.
- Houston: In Houston's case, it ties in with the fact that the Cougars are number one on most computers, including NET. They also have 13 Q1 wins, two more than anyone else.
Purdue, UW and Houston are all conference champions ranked in the top three nationally, according to KenPom.com. And if Purdue wins on Sunday, all three schools will enter the conference tournament with records of 28-3. It's really interesting how close these teams are in terms of accomplishments and how far apart they are from literally every other team in this sport.
North Carolina. Tennessee. Iowa. Clayton. Arizona. They are all good teams. One of them will likely be the fourth No. 1 seed in the 2024 NCAA Tournament. But no matter what happens between now and Selection Sunday, none of them, or anyone else, will be able to crack the top three, with the overall No. 1 seed not decided until hours before the rankings are announced. Chances are you won't.
