South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster and Marshall University President Brad D. Smith will co-chair a new Southern Regional School Boards Board (SREB) on artificial intelligence and education. The two-year commission will convene leaders from education and business to explore how artificial intelligence (AI) is used in the classroom and how to prepare a workforce to be transformed by technology. Smith, who is also a former Silicon Valley CEO, added, “I'm excited to learn about the discoveries that AI technology will develop in the future.” “We have a challenging but promising opportunity to prepare students for a digital world where opportunities for life, employment and contribution are evolving.”
SREB's members in each of the 16 states include the governor's office, state education and workforce agencies, K-12 educators and leaders, higher education teachers and leaders, business executives, administrators, and engineers. will appear. SREB plans to announce the members of the committee in the coming weeks.
SREB's AI and Education Committee will begin meeting in March to review research and industry data and hear from education experts. The commission aims to: 1.) use AI in teaching and learning; 2.) develop relevant policies in K-12 and post-secondary education; and 3.) prepare students for careers in AI.
