Special education services are supported by millage as well as state, federal, and local grants and funding. Koziol said in the release that without the millage, the district would have to reallocate funding from existing student programs to comply with state and federal mandates for special education services.
The funds will be used to reimburse the Chaem School District, Chaem-operated classrooms, and Patricia A. Taylor School for special education-related expenses and special training and evaluation services for teachers. This funding will also be used to provide special transportation for students with disabilities and job and college preparation.
Voters in the Alancon, Beaver Island, Boyne City, Boyne Falls, Central Lake, Charlevoix, Ellsworth, East Jordan, Harbor Springs, Pellston and Petoskey school districts will be asked to vote on the proposal.
