An arrest warrant has been issued for a 22-year-old suspect charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of Chicago police officer Luis Huesca, NBC5 Investigations reported.
On Friday afternoon, a judge signed charging documents and an arrest warrant for Xavier L. Tate Jr., 22, according to a filing Friday in Cook County Circuit Court.
Chicago police declined to comment, saying only that no one is in custody at this time.
According to court records, Tate used a .40-caliber handgun to shoot and kill Huesca, who was found with multiple gunshot wounds near his home in Gage Park early Sunday morning. At 2:53 a.m., officers found a 30-year-old man shot in the face after responding to a ShotSpotter alert near West 56th Street and South Kedzie Street, according to a police report.
Huesca was rushed to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead from his injuries. Huesca, a six-year veteran, was in uniform and heading home after his shift when the shooting occurred. His Toyota SUV was stolen after the shooting, but was later recovered.
The suspect was scheduled to appear in court on an unrelated matter earlier this week, but did not appear, according to court records.
News of the arrest warrant comes as the community and Huesca's fellow Chicago police officers prepare for his visitation and funeral in the coming days.
