Spring is officially here, and special education teachers in Canyon County are helping students develop their green thumbs while learning science.
“I think my teaching style is kind. We have people from all different levels in this classroom,” Laney Miller said. “So catering to what they need to be successful is the most important thing to me.”
Miller is a teacher at Caldwell High School. She instills a love of science in special education students in a unique way.
“I give them an initial presentation of what the challenge looks like in their hands,” Miller said. “Then everyone will have a chance to do it individually.”
It was an idea that her students helped her come up with.
“Before, it was all about documents and videos and all sorts of things,” Miller said. “Kids will get bored quickly and very easily.”
Meanwhile, Caldwell teachers and their students have been reaping the benefits since acquiring scientific equipment.
“There aren't that many redirects,” Miller said. “Kids are now able to pay more attention, have better concentration, and be able to see visually what to do instead of just sitting and listening. This made a huge difference.”
Miller was able to change that with the help of a grant from CapEd Credit Union.
“The kids were so bright and excited because they knew what this meant,” Miller said. “They knew this meant they could get the equipment they wanted.”
It's lessons like these that Miller wants his students to take with them outside the classroom.
“I love being a part of seeing them succeed and seeing them shine from something they didn't believe in to begin with,” Myler said.
Miller said she only installed the device in October, so she expects it to be more successful as time goes on.
