LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — With six months until the start of the 2024 Las Vegas Grand Prix, business owners are trying new efforts to stop the race.
Preparations are underway, including ticket sales, but a new petition is asking the commissioners to pause before officially allowing the Grand Prix to go ahead this November.
Clark County commissioners must approve a special use permit for Formula 1 before multi-million dollar supercars can race on Las Vegas Boulevard from Nov. 21-23.
In the petition, executives who claim the controversial race preparation set-up has cost them more than $30 million, ask that F1 be denied permission unless it agrees to certain terms. .
Back in January, we spoke to one owner who lost millions of dollars and how he was trying to bounce back as the obstacles worsened. See below or read more here.
'So my peak business…will cease to exist again': Local businesses face further hurdles after F1 bridge controversy
Gino Ferraro, owner of Ferraro's Ristorante, said: “Until now, F1 has not held a public meeting and all of us who have lost millions of dollars in 2023 have not even sat in the same room.” Ta. “F1 is selling tickets and moving forward as if these problems don't exist or we don't exist. My family restaurant has been here for 39 years, we matter. ”
Another owner, Mazie Amer, says everything was lost after the 2023 race in Las Vegas, including the restaurant's Tex-Mex tequila. “We don't want to see others suffer like we did during the F1 race, but ultimately we cannot accept the loss of revenue and have no choice but to close. The 2024 race will have the same outcome unless F1 takes responsibility and takes steps to avoid impacting the Las Vegas Strip.
According to area business owners involved in the process, the reasons for the petition are:
- Negative impact on local business: Despite its supposed economic benefits, hosting the Las Vegas Grand Prix negatively impacts small businesses, Strip employees, and transportation companies, resulting in significant revenue losses, reduced foot traffic, and general facing major business interruptions. ”
- traffic congestion and confusion: The closure of the resort corridor and the construction of bridges at Flamingo and Koval will disrupt the normal flow of traffic in our city. This disruption not only inconveniences residents, but also poses logistical challenges for tourists, employees and public transport, and businesses face lost revenue.
- Community input and transparency: The decision to host such a large-scale event requires transparent communication and active participation from the community. However, the lack of meaningful consultation with residents and stakeholders has raised concerns about accountability and democratic processes.
The statement concludes: “In conclusion, we urge the authorities to listen to our concerns and take immediate action to cancel the Las Vegas Grand Prix. The well-being of our city and the interests of its residents must always come first.”
