SULFUR, Okla. (KFOR) — Sulfur residents are calling for peace after a life-altering incident Saturday night.
The city suffered significant damage from the tornado, which destroyed homes, trees, and businesses.
“It's a little surreal,” said Gary Mensch, whose business went bankrupt.
Mensch and his family owned JJ's Furniture for decades, but the tornado that hit his town destroyed the business they had known all their lives.
“Twenty-five years of hard work is being undone and there's nothing I can do about it,” he said.
Although the tornado did not directly hit Mensch's home, the roof of the furniture store was completely torn off. Debris and bricks are scattered on the ground, and there is little left to salvage.
“The water there is three inches deep and this is all wood furniture. So once it gets there, that's it,” Mensch said.
The tornado injured at least 30 people in Sulphur alone. One woman was killed and was pulled from the rubble of a downtown bar, officials said.
Mensch said he has never seen anything like this, but he knows his community is strong and currently focused on rebuilding and moving forward.
“No matter how much things happen, no matter how successful you are, it can all end the same way,” Mensch said. “There is positivity in every situation.”
