NATCHEZ, Mich. (WJTV) – An unknown company has donated more than 30 acres of land for the new Adams County Jail.
The Natchez Democrat reported the land is located on Route 61 north of Natchez.
Debbie Germany, who heads a review committee sanctioned by the county supervisors, asked the supervisors to authorize the county attorney to work with business owners to secure real estate donations.
Adams County Sheriff Travis Patten previously said the jail was not safe to house inmates.
In 2023, authorities said a security breach occurred when five male inmates entered the women's block with the assistance of a female inmate.
Mr Patten said the male inmates broke a faulty light in the shower area and crawled through a hole into the women's block of the prison.
The sheriff said jail staff witnessed the incident on camera and contacted personnel at the facility. They were able to respond to the area and control the situation.
Patten said the breach destroyed a 2-inch water pipe and caused damage within the facility's walls. Computers and wireless equipment were damaged or lost in the floodwaters, the sheriff said.
Adams and Natchez counties contract with the Concordia Parish Sheriff's Office to house the county's inmates.
