The Board of Education (BOE) has begun a national search for a superintendent following the resignation of former Superintendent Dr. Monifa McKnight and the appointment of Interim Superintendent Dr. Monique Felder.
The BOE plans to hire a research firm to recruit and vet candidates.
Meanwhile, the school district is seeking input.
The website includes a form where you can list what you think is most important when hiring a director.
Students, staff and community members will be able to complete the survey starting Wednesday.
Three in-person town halls will be held in April.

- April 2, 2024 – Seneca Valley High School, 6 p.m.
- April 3, 2024 – Richard Montgomery High School, 6:00 p.m.
- April 4, 2024 – Wheaton High School, 6 p.m.
A virtual meeting will be held, although the date has not been determined.
The search is divided into three phases. The BOE will first collect results from what residents, students, staff and county leaders think makes a good leader.
The second stage will involve a paid national survey. The identity of candidates selected for interview will be treated as confidential.
In the final stage, the BOE will conduct interviews with the community board. They then announce their choices.
According to a news release from Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS), “The board is committed to conducting a thorough search until we find the right candidate who meets the leadership profile.”
“The importance of the superintendent search process cannot be underestimated,” BOE President Carla Silvestre said in a news release.
“It is critical that we have a great superintendent who shares our commitment to student success and works tirelessly toward that goal. We urge them to participate in the process to ensure their voices are heard and select a superintendent who reflects the values and priorities of our diverse community.”
According to state law, the appointment must be completed by July 1 for the Maryland Department of Education to approve the selection before the new school year begins.
Under Maryland law, county superintendent appointments must be completed by July 1 for approval by the Maryland Department of Education and appointment for the next school year.
