At a special public meeting on March 21, the Alameda Unified School District (AUSD) Board of Education approved the hiring of Angela Barrett as the new principal of Alameda High School. Barrett replaces Robert Iserburn, who is retiring after leading the school for 10 years.
An experienced administrator, Barrett currently serves as assistant principal at Piedmont Middle School. Previously, she served as assistant principal at Nair's 6th grade through 12th grade program in Alameda and as assistant principal at Envision Academy High School in Oakland. She also taught English at Amador Valley High School in Pleasanton and City Arts and Technology High School in San Francisco.
“From the beginning, we were impressed by Ms. Barrett's academic rigor and commitment to relationships, her passion for equitable educational practices, and her dedication to communication and collaboration,” said the AUSD Superintendent. Pasquale Scuderi said. “We look forward to introducing her to Alameda High School staff, students and her family over the coming months.”
A committee of 18 stakeholders, including AHS staff, students, parents, and other AUSD principals, interviewed an initial field of candidates and forwarded the final candidates to a second internal committee, where the Board of Education Final recommendations have been made.
Barrett earned a bachelor's degree in English literature and creative writing from California State University, San Bernardino. She has two master's degrees, one in Education from California State University East Her Bay and one in Educational Leadership from Mills College. She also earned a management certification from Mills College.
“I am honored to attend Alameda High School,” Barrett said. “I am a dedicated leader who actively listens to our students, families, and staff to continue to provide an equitable and high-quality educational experience for all students.”
“We are grateful for Mr. Isabhan's leadership over the past 10 years, especially for the many student-centered programs he and his team have initiated and nurtured over the years,” said AUSD Board of Education President Jennifer Williams. I am grateful.” We look forward to getting to know Ms. Barrett and supporting her vision and work during the upcoming transition. ”
