Binance has faced significant backlash online after users slammed its use of perfume in marketing to women as a sexist attempt to appeal to women by playing on female stereotypes.
It's unusual for a major cryptocurrency company like Binance to capitalize on market enthusiasm and launch non-crypto accessories, such as Bitcoin T-shirts, meme coin-themed phone covers, and NFT-themed sunglasses. That's not the point. However, Binance made a very unique move yesterday, becoming the first company in the industry to launch a women's fragrance called CRYPTO.
Binance is promoting this perfume ahead of International Women's Day to motivate women to actively participate in the cryptocurrency space.
Despite continued calls for change, the gender gap in the tech industry remains significant. The Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA) reported in its annual State of the Tech report that while women will make up 49% of the total U.S. workforce in 2022, Only 26% of departmental positions were held by women.
After the post, a flurry of reactions began pouring in online immediately from people criticizing Binance for what was clearly a sexist blunder.
