The Athletic's UK and Europe Editor-in-Chief has joined the BBC in charge of sports coverage.
Reporting to Charlotte Moore, Head of Content, Alex Kagelski will succeed Barbara Slater in an overarching role, setting editorial and creative strategy and leading teams across commissioning, production, digital and journalism. It will be.
Kay Jelski will also represent the BBC with external parties and rights holders, with responsibility for rights acquisition transactions across TV, audio and online.
Since 2019, Kay Jelski has been the editor-in-chief of the UK and European division of The New York Times' subscription sports website, overseeing the site's international growth. He previously served as sports editor for British newspapers The Times and Daily Mail.
Mr Moore described him as a “dynamic and creative editorial leader with a clear vision of how to lead BBC Sport into the future”.
“He joins us from The Athletic, a highly regarded digital sports subscription service, where he developed and grew the brand from scratch to become an industry leader in the UK. “I have been responsible for overseeing tremendous growth,” she added. “Alex has always embraced innovation. His editorial judgment and expertise are excellent and he brings a wealth of experience.”
Kay Jelski said: “Like most people, many of my sporting memories have been lived with the BBC guiding me and giving me the opportunity to shape what it should be in the years to come.
