Danish shipping company Maersk has chartered the Singapore-flagged container ship Dali, which crashed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore early Tuesday morning, Maersk told CNN.
The Dali, which can carry 10,000 20-foot shipping containers, was operating on the route between Baltimore and Asia as part of a partnership between Maersk and MSC, said Emily Stausboul, a Zeneta shipping market analyst. That's what it means.
Maersk is one of the world's largest container shipping companies, transporting everything from apparel and auto parts to electronics and heavy equipment on more than 700 vessels around the world.
The airline serves more than 100,000 businesses and calls at more than 500 ports in more than 130 countries, according to its website. We move over 12 million containers every year.
Maersk is one of several container shipping companies that has suspended transit through the Red Sea and Suez Canal due to continued attacks on ships, including its own, by Iran-backed Houthi rebels.
The company recorded its highest annual profit ever in 2022, particularly driven by higher transportation prices and strong demand for products in the first half of the year.
But the company laid off 10,000 employees last year as demand slumped and freight prices fell, causing a sharp drop in revenue.
