Record-breaking temperatures are causing problems for ski resorts again this winter. An EU project is currently investigating how elevator operators can best respond to climate change. In St. Corona am Wechsel, Austria, miners are already clearing remaining snow from the ski slopes for summer sports enthusiasts.
One solution to the snow problem is summer sports. Karl Morgenbesser, lift operator at St. Corona am Wechsel, said: “The ski season ended earlier than expected, so our trail construction teams are already on the slopes shoveling trails, and mountain biking. We are making it possible for them to start.”
Due to the lack of snowfall in St. Corona am Wechsel, mountain bikers take to the ski slopes as early as March. Other activities you can enjoy in the summer include tobogganing and hiking. The EU-co-funded TranStat project connects his nine resorts in Austria, Slovenia, Italy, France and Switzerland and is testing different formats. Austria's small ski resort now makes more money from summer sports than winter, and other ski resorts are expected to follow suit.
Rising real estate prices due to the purchase of vacation homes by tourists has also become a problem. TranStat said he plans to issue guidelines on livable and climate-smart winter sports destinations within two years.
