MODESTO — A battle is brewing in Modesto over the sex education curriculum and whether it actually complies with California law.
The Modesto Pregnancy Center, also known as Personal Health Now, provides education to middle school and high school students within the Modesto City School District.
California Attorney General Rob Bonta said his office has received complaints from parents that the curriculum may include religious doctrine regarding the topic of abortion.
“Ensuring that students receive comprehensive, non-judgmental sex education is not just a matter of choice, it is a fundamental necessity that lays the foundation for our children's success.” Bonta said in a press release Monday.
We contacted the school district and were told that they had not heard from Mr. Bonta's office, but that they would be happy to review the curriculum.
“Our district is undergoing a review of this curriculum. We invite parents to participate in the review process and appreciate the feedback we have received over the past few months. This review is detailed and comprehensive. As with any new curriculum, we encourage parents to make decisions that are in their families' best interests, including the right to opt out of comprehensive sexual health education. We support the right.curriculum,” said Sharokina Shams, district spokeswoman.
Bonta's office said Modesto Pregnancy Center must respond to the letter within 20 days.
