Atlas Air hires chief digital officer with e-commerce expertise
Atlas Air Worldwide appointed a new chief information officer in January. The move signals the continued importance of the role as companies continue to place chief information officers and chief digital officers on executive teams.
Atlas Air's hiring of Joel Goldberg also highlights the value of a chief digital officer with e-commerce and retail expertise.
Atlas Air is a leading American cargo airline, passenger charter airline, and aircraft leasing company headquartered in Purchase, New York. The company is also the world's largest operator of Boeing 747 aircraft, with a total fleet of 54 aircraft.
The role of the Chief Information Officer at Atlas Air
Atlas officially announced Goldberg as its new senior vice president and chief information officer on January 25th. He was appointed on February 26th and will report directly to CEO Michael Steen.
“We are excited to have Joel lead our IT organization at this exciting time of transformation for our company,” Sheen said in a detailed announcement about Goldberg's hire. “Joel's leadership of the vision for our digital strategy and focus on continuing to deliver operational excellence will be critical as we prepare for our next phase of growth.”
Mr. Goldberg currently serves as CIO and is responsible for Atlas Air's corporate operations. He also oversees Infrastructure Architecture, Systems and Data Architecture, Cybersecurity, Business Service Management, Project Management, Information Technology Management and Compliance.

Mr. Goldberg joins Atlas from Wizz Air, where he served as Global Chief Digital Officer for five years. In his previous role, Mr. Goldberg defined and led the airline's digital strategy, including the airline's successful digital transformation.
Prior to working at Wizz Air, Goldberg was Senior Director of Technology for Nike in Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA). He also held a series of positions of increasing responsibility at Maersk, an integrated container logistics and supply services company. There he became Director of e-Business and Global Director of Business Applications. He holds a Master of Business Administration from Indiana University and a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from the University of Florida.
