The latest AI news confirms that British luxury sports car manufacturer Aston Martin has finally won a legal victory against Kindpedia after raising concerns about confusingly similar domain names that are identical to its own brand.
Aston Martin trademark confusion
Last year, it was revealed that US company Kindpedia, a DNS administrator, purchased the AstonMartin.ai domain name and listed it for trading the next day. To be precise, he registered his AstonMartin.ai and put it up for sale on the Caribbean island of Anguilla. The move led to a lengthy legal battle focused on the AI component.
Anguilla typically uses the .ai country code at the end of local domain names. So when the luxury car maker filed a lawsuit against the company, its lawyers argued that Aston Martin did not own the trademark in the region. This seemed like a bold defense against Aston Martin, but it could work in the case of cybersquatting.
The American company also said the automaker did not need to file a lawsuit before filing suit.
According to a published statement, “…the Complainants have blindsided the Respondents with unsubstantiated claims and malicious attempts to seize control of domain names to which they have no legitimate rights under the policy. “All attempts at an amicable resolution have been brazenly avoided.” “This Machiavellian maneuver clearly demonstrates petitioner's sinister intent to harass and intimidate respondent through unjust means.”
