According to Forbes Advisor, Alabama is the third worst state in the country for mental health.
The site publishes an annual survey that ranks the state near the top for several factors, including the fact that more than half of residents with mental illnesses do not seek treatment because of cost.
But the magazine says it's not just the South. Six of the top 10 states with worst mental health care are neighboring states, including Texas, Georgia, Florida, Mississippi, and South Carolina.
Texas topped the list for the second year in a row, followed by Georgia.
According to Forbes, one in five American adults experiences a mental health condition each year.
But three-quarters of them are dissatisfied with their mental health treatment, and more than half receive no treatment at all, according to Mental Health America.
Forbes Advisor used seven metrics to rank each state. Percentage of adults with mental illness who are not receiving treatment; Percentage of people who are unable to see a doctor due to cost; Youth with depression who are underserved; Adults who are uninsured; This is the percentage of young people who have no insurance. It covers mental or emotional issues and the number of treatment centers per 10,000 companies.
Alabama received a score of 87.6 out of 100, according to Forbes Advisors.
According to the study, Alabama has the third highest rate of uninsured adults with mental illness at 17.9%.
The state also has the fourth highest percentage of adults with a mental illness who are not receiving any treatment (62.4%) and the fifth highest percentage of adults with a mental illness who are not receiving appropriate treatment. It is 35.4%.
Alabama ranks 6th in percentage of young people with private health insurance that does not cover mental and emotional issues, and those with mental health disorders who are unable to see a doctor due to cost. It ranks 8th in terms of percentage of adults.
The state also has the eighth-lowest number of mental health treatment centers, at 12.46 per 10,000 establishments.
