Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates says AI chatbots could be used to improve children's reading and writing skills within the next 18 months.
“AI will gain that ability and become as good a tutor as humans have ever been,” Gates explained during a fireside chat at the ASU+GSV Summit in San Diego.
AI chatbots, such as OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's Bard, have developed rapidly in recent months and can now compete with human-level intelligence on some standardized tests.
Gates said teaching writing skills has traditionally been difficult because computers lack the cognitive ability to replicate human thought processes. However, AI chatbots can recognize and recreate human-like language.
New York Times technology columnist Kevin Roos is already using ChatGPT to improve his writing by leveraging AI's ability to quickly search online style guides. Some academics are impressed by chatbots' ability to summarize texts and provide feedback, or even write complete essays.
Technology needs to improve before it can become a practical tutor, and Gates said AI needs to improve its ability to read and reproduce human language to motivate students.
It may be surprising to expect chatbots to be good at reading and writing before math, but the latter is often used in the development of AI technology, and chatbots have difficulty with mathematical calculations. I am.
If you already have a solved formula in the dataset your chatbot is trained on, it can provide an answer. However, Gates explained that calculating a unique solution is more complex and requires improved reasoning ability.
Gates believes the technology will improve within the next two years, potentially making tutoring available to a wider range of students who otherwise wouldn't have access to it. That's what I think.
While some free versions of chatbots already exist, Gates expects more advanced versions to become available for a fee, but with less one-on-one tutoring from a human instructor. We believe it will also be affordable and accessible.
