An advisory released by India's Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) last Friday declared that AI technologies under development must get explicit permission from the government before being made available to the public.
Additionally, developers can deploy these technologies only after labeling the potential fallibility or unreliability of the output produced.
Additionally, the document outlines plans to implement a “consent pop-up” mechanism to notify users about potential defects or errors generated by the AI. It also requires deepfakes to be marked with persistent unique metadata or other identifiers to prevent abuse.
In addition to these measures, the recommendations require all intermediaries and platforms to ensure that any AI modeling products, including large-scale language models (LLMs), are free from bias and discrimination and do not threaten the integrity of the electoral process. I am ordering you to do so.
Some industry insiders have criticized India's plans as going too far.
Developers are required to comply with the advisory within 15 days of publication. It has been suggested that after achieving compliance and applying for permission to release a product, developers may be required to demonstrate to government officials or undergo stress testing.
Although the recommendations are not legally binding at this time, they indicate the government's expectations and hint at future regulatory directions in the AI field.
“We are doing this today as an advisory that we ask (AI platforms) to follow,” IT Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar said. He added that this position would eventually be enshrined in law.
“Generative AI and AI platforms available on the internet must take full responsibility for what they do, and they cannot escape responsibility by saying the platform is being tested,” Chandrase said. Mr. Karl continued. Local media reported.
