BISMARCK, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – State Schools Superintendent Kirsten Beisler invites applications to serve on the State Public Schools Board of Education, a critical oversight role for North Dakota's K-12 education system. North Dakotans from two county groups were invited.
The seven-member board oversees North Dakota's seven regional education associations and the North Dakota K-12 Education Coordinating Council, fostering collaboration among education stakeholders and promoting educational innovation. We support these efforts and provide policy recommendations to state legislatures. Its members also serve on the State Career and Technical Education Commission, which oversees North Dakota's CTE institutions and their programs.
The main tasks of the public school board include determining requests for transfer of property, reorganization, and dissolution from the school district. Usually held 10 times a year.
Each of the six board members represents a group of counties as designated by state law. The governor appoints them for six-year terms. The state school superintendent is the seventh member of the board and the executive director.
The members whose terms are ending represent Burns, Cass, Grand Forks, Griggs, Nelson, Steele and Traill counties. Benson, Bottineau, Cavalier, McHenry, Pembina, Pierce, Ramsey, Renville, Loretto, Towner and Walsh Counties.
North Dakotans living in either of the two county groups listed above are encouraged to apply to serve on the public school board using the Governor's website. The application deadline is Monday, April 1, 2024 at 5:00 PM Central Time.
State law requires that eligible applications be reviewed by the president of North Dakota United, the North Dakota Educational Leadership Council, and the North Dakota School Boards Association. The committee will submit a list of names to the Governor for appointment.
