WASECA, MN — A wildfire was burning north of Waseca Sunday afternoon, according to the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency.
Traffic cameras nearby showed a large plume of smoke. Radar showed smoke drifting to the northeast.
The Waseca County Sheriff's Office said the fire started near Snake Trail and asked people to avoid the area. A state trooper on the scene told WCCO's David Schumann that six to eight homes were evacuated as a precaution. Crews said several small structures were on fire and winds were making it difficult to contain the fire.
The MPCA said the fire could impact air quality along Interstate 35 from Waseca to the Twin Cities. According to the MPPCA, a cold front moving in later this evening will push the smoke to the southeast.
Waseca is part of the area Red flag warning in progress Sunday. The National Weather Service said conditions in the area are ideal for fires to spread and residents should avoid burning while the warning is in effect.
The National Interstate Fire Center released data showing damage expected in Minnesota and northern Wisconsin. Wildfire risk increases this spring.
