CHICOPEE – A 3-year-old boy was found safe after Massachusetts State Police issued a temporary Amber Alert for a stolen vehicle from Chicopee Friday morning.
The boy was found at a hotel in Windsor, Conn., and the Amber Alert was canceled around 10:30 a.m. The boy was taken to a hospital in Massachusetts for precautionary tests, but did not appear to be injured. The suspect, identified as 52-year-old Vadim Vorobyov of Springfield, was taken into custody at the Dollar Tree in Windsor.
State police said the suspect dropped off the boy at the Rodeway Inn, and hotel employees called police to report the child had been left on the premises. Video from the scene shows the suspect removing the boy from the car and driving off, leaving the toddler alone in the parking lot.
Vadim Vorobyov charged with kidnapping
Police said Vorobyov will be charged with kidnapping, child endangerment and car theft. Authorities believe he had no connection to the child and the crime appears to have been unplanned.
A red 2021 Toyota Camry was parked outside a home on Exchange Street in Chicopee with the motor running and was stolen at 8:40 a.m. with a boy in the back seat, according to state police. It was done. The boy's mother called 911 to report the theft.
Police said a license plate reader identified the vehicle as it was heading south on Route 91 in Longmeadow. Toyota helped police find an unoccupied car at Windsor's Kennedy Road shopping plaza.
