Three police officers were shot and killed at a southeast D.C. home Wednesday, and a suspect continues to open fire, D.C. police said. A fourth police officer suffered minor injuries, according to multiple sources.
The gunman remained in the residence as of 9:20 a.m. and continued firing even after police had cordoned off several blocks and forced multiple schools into lockdown.
Officials said officers may have been executing an arrest warrant when shots were fired inside a residence in the 5000 block of Hannah Place Southeast near Benning Road and the Maryland Line early Wednesday morning. That's what it means. Gunshots can be heard on surveillance camera footage.
D.C. police confirmed that the three officers who sustained gunshot wounds are expected to survive. Officials said a fourth officer was injured but was not shot.
Officials said some officers were taken to the hospital in police cars rather than ambulances.
It is unclear whether anyone other than the officer was injured.
Information about the shooting suspect was not immediately released.
Around 9 a.m., D.C. police said in a statement that “the scene remains active.”
Garfield Elementary School on Southeast H Street and Plummer Elementary School on Texas Avenue Southeast were placed on lockdown, according to D.C. Public Schools.
Uniformed employees were seen dropping off children at the KIPP charter school near 46th and Benning Road SE. A group of police cars and emergency vehicles could be seen near the entrance to the school.
“I'm furious because my son goes to school here. I used to drop him off at school and he couldn't go…I'm shocked. I'm really shocked. '' said one mother.
A large black vehicle resembling an armored truck was seen entering the cordoned off area.
Police asked reporters to stay away from the scene.
