MARQUETTE – Superior Health Foundation announced Tuesday that it has named Megan Murphy as the organization's new executive director.
Murphy comes to the role after serving as Director of Community Health and Capacity Building at the Michigan Health Foundation, where she played a leading role in developing a $6.5 million grant and nonprofit assistance program.
“Superior Health Foundation is a special organization, and the impact our grants have in rural communities is tremendous.” Sarah Giles, Chair of the Superior Health Foundation Board of Directors, said: “Megan has great vision and strategy to expand the Foundation's reach to all regions of the Upper Peninsula. Her creativity, drive, and familiarity with UP will contribute to her success for years to come. It will be helpful.”
Murphy’s role with the Michigan Health Fund began in 2016, starting as a grants manager. Two years later, she moved into a role as program director for the Foundation's Nutrition and Healthy Lifestyles program. She also held other positions in nonprofit organizations prior to her appointment to the Endowment Fund.
Murphy earned a bachelor's degree in anthropology and international relations from Grand Valley State University and a master's degree in public administration from Western Michigan University. She grew up in Ironwood and currently lives in Pinckney.
“As someone who grew up in UP and has spent several years working on health issues in far-flung communities, this feels like home to me.” Murphy said. “The Superior Health Foundation is an innovative grant-making organization focused solely on the health of UP residents. I look forward to leveraging my experience as a statewide funder to lead the Foundation into this new chapter.” Masu.”
Mr. Murphy will take over as SHF's executive director on April 1. She will succeed current Executive Director Jim Lajoie, who has held the position since 2012 and is retiring in May.
